It was a cold blustery day as I made my way to the bookstore. I was somewhat surprised that Coby was okay with me going. I had invited him to join me but he stated he had too much work to do.

I couldn’t understand why, but I was nervous to see that man again. And as I walked into the bookstore and saw him standing by the section of books I frequented, that nervousness only heightened.

“Ah, it seems we meet again,” the beautiful man stated, catching me staring.

My neck heated, and I silently scolded myself for thinking he was attractive when really, he scared the shit out of me. Which wasn’t easy to do.

“I guess so.” I smiled, attempting to be friendly.

“Something’s wrong,” he said, frowning.

“No.” I shook my head. “Sorry.”

“You’re lying.” He turned to me. “Do I make you uncomfortable?”

“You’re intense. Like my boyfriend.”

Something flashed in the man’s gaze over this new-found information. But he didn’t say anything about it.

“Do you come here to buy books or are you psychic and know when I’m going to show up?” I crossed my arms under my chest, frowning, and embraced the sass that Coby had come to enjoy.

The man chuckled. “Paranoid a bit, are we?”

“What do you expect in this day and age? Maybe it’s just a coincidence but every time I’m here, so are you. So, tell me, Mr. …” When he didn’t give me his name, I huffed and continued. “Anyway … why are you here?”

“Isn’t that a loaded question?” He grinned. “I could tell you but then I’d have to kill you and we wouldn’t want to ruin that pretty face of yours.”

“Right,” I said slowly. Little did he know, that I could kill him just as quick. One thrust of a hardcover book in his temple and he would drop. I just had to him hard enough and he would fall to my feet. On that note … “I think I should go.” I grabbed a random novel, headed to the cash register, and checked out. When I looked to see if the man was following me, he was nowhere to be found. Odd. Definitely fucking odd.

Something about him bothered me and set my nerves on edge. Maybe Coby was right in his warnings and that I should stay away from the bookstore. Although, he would like it if I just stayed with him instead.

My phone rang, jarring me from my thoughts as I ran across the street. Noticing it was Brox calling me, I halted suddenly when I reached the sidewalk. “Brox.”

“You need to get to the hospital,” he demanded.

“Oh, God.” I clapped a hand to my mouth. “What happened?”

“Benny. He’s been shot.”
